Well for a start, a crash diet, a panic diet, a ‘diet’ without any forethought can be dangerous. It could, for example be leaving out essential vitamins, minerals and key foods. Even so, if you have subscribed to some kind of diet plan how do we know it is healthy?

So what are healthy ways to lose weight, how is this defined? Losing weight is not really a science, although some would have you believe this, it is essentially a lifestyle change. Healthy ways to lose weight falls into two distinct areas of lifestyle:


1. The foods we eat, and:
2. The exercise we take.


Ok, there are all sorts gurus out there who claim to have a ‘magic bullet’ which combines an exercise regime with a ‘diet’ program. But the problem with these is they often mean a sudden change from your current lifestyle – and coping with this sudden change can be hard work!

Ideally, healthy ways to lose weight should be a process which is brought on gradually. Let me explain. Let us assume you are overweight, eat the wrong foods (burgers, chips, fried chicken etc.) and watch lots of television or play lots of computer games. Ok, you might not be this bad but you know where I am coming from. If someone pulls you of the couch and takes you the gym and pushes a salad in front of you and says these are healthy ways to lose weight, you are probably not going to be too happy. Of course, it won’t be long before you are back in your comfort zone – on the couch with the chips.

What you really need to do is first of all is think about SOME of the things that are bad for you and ask yourself, can I give up ONE of these bad things and substitute it for a ‘healthy’ option. That would not be such a bad deal would it? Ok, so you decide to permanently swap eating chips and eat a bag of dried fruit instead. This a small change – but a big step! Do this for a different food, one per week or even per fortnight, and soon you will have made quite a substantial change towards healthy ways to lose weight.

Now, do the same with activity. Just take a little walk around the block once a week at first and then later maybe two or three times per week.

Before long the small change in food and exercise will begin to make you feel good about yourself and this should give you a spur to go on. You see what we have done. We shifted the focus away from all diet and exercise mumbo jumbo which gives you a mountain to climb and instead concentrated of little changes, deals you made with yourself not some trainer or dietician. You were in control and set your own goals and pace.
