abs2Always start the day with breakfast. After your eight hours or so sleep your body's metabolism needs a kick start to get it going and converting calories into energy and breakfast is the way to do it. But if you wake up thirsty - don't fall into the trap of reaching for that long glass of orange juice which some - otherwise good weight loss programs recommend. Whilst many consider this a healthy start, the fact of the matter is that when fruit is juiced it is stripped of its pulp and fibre and the body has no need to process it so it goes straight into the bloodstream as a sugar hit. Drink a glass of water instead (and drink plenty more throughout the day) and get your fruit intake straight from the fruit bowl or cut up into a cereal bowl. A sprinkling of bran on the top will give extra fibre to help regulate the bowel.

The secret of any good weight loss program is to never allow yourself to get hungry. By eating 3 small, regular meals each day interspersed with two healthy snacks, mid morning and mid afternoon, you are ensuring that your blood sugar levels are remaining steady and this in itself will avoid the peaks and troughs (known also as spikes) which can lead to cravings which as we all know can result into overeating, eating the wrong type of foods such as sweet and sugary foods and binge eating sessions.

As with all good weight loss programs, you should keep the fats low and the carbs good. Low fats we all know about - these are lean cuts of meat - with all visible fat removed before cooking. But what about carbs? There has been much talk and pictures in the press about the celebrity low carb/no carb diets, but the fact is that our bodies do need carbohydrates to enable them to function. The key point here is that the carbs should be good carbs and not bad carbs (just as we have good and bad fats).

Good carbs to include in your good weight loss program are brown rice, wholewheat spaghetti and pasta and wholewheat couscous. The difference between the good and bad carbs is that carbs in the bad carb group (white bread, white pizza crust, cake made from white flour etc., ) have had all, or much of, the fibre removed in the refining process and you are left with a flour that is devoid of many of the nutrients in wholemeal, unproccessed flour.
